Another AWESOME two days at Bristol Talent Lab! Aside from showing what a creative, wonderfully vibrant city we live in, we all decided that it’s important to give young people a voice, and support for the issues that matter to them. As such, day three was all about Youth Issues. We talked about all sorts- drink, drugs, unemployment, pretty much anything you can think of that might affect our generation. The other part of that discussion was to talk about what support is out there for young people that is out there already, and we concluded that the system could be better in terms of accessibility; it may be there, but its knowing where to look and having the confidence to seek that help. In light of these, we were set another challenge; To choose an issue we felt passionate about, and create and build a campaign around it. In my group, we spoke a lot about how people at some point in their lives will face being stereotyped, especially youngsters. This can be through anything like the way they dress, what music they enjoy, etc. As a result of this, we felt that there is a huge amount of negative press and judgement, and the world needs more positivity!
This whole thing is close to my heart as I’m in a wheelchair, I have a condition called Cerebral Palsy. I feel that sometimes, people look at me and see the chair first, not me sitting in it. Of course, my condition is a part of me, but it shouldn’t define me.
And that’s how we came up with our #IAMME campaign. You know that quote from Dr Seuss?
”Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.?’ That’s what we were inspired by. We wanted to celebrate the idea that everyone is unique, and create tolerance for diversity. We loved the idea of getting people to tell us one thing about themselves, and it could be as wacky as they wanted! We went out and asked the lovely people of Bristol (including our Mayor) for their help… here’s what we came up with 😀 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCMkzagdwi0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Hope you enjoy! This was all filmed and edited today, in one afternoon 😉
